It’s a well known fact that us Aussies are a generous bunch. Whether it’s giving our neighbours a hand or surprising our loved ones with that special something they’ve had their eye on all year. Giving is what Aussies do best.

And this is no more evident than in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

In fact, we’re so generous that as a country we’re forecast to spend over $50 billion in the weeks leading up to Christmas1 to give our friends and family the best holiday we can, with over $11 billion on gifts alone2.

That’s a whole lot of gifts and a whole lot of gift wrapping.

Did you know...?

We use so much wrapping paper at Christmas time in Australia, that we could actually gift wrap the earth 4 times!3

This might sound crazy, but it’s true. Currently we use over 150,000km of wrapping paper every year3

Rip, scrunch, toss!

Yup, that’s the sound of literally thousands of tonnes of gift wrapping being torn open on Christmas day and thrown in bins all around Australia - all in less than a minute.

The look of joy on the children’s faces is nearly worth it right?

Well, something you might not realise is that a lot of the gift wrapping paper we love so much can’t actually be recycled.

We might think that those perfectly wrapped presents, with their glossy plastic, glitter patches, metallic or foil finishes, look good sitting under our tree inside; but considering roughly 24 trees are cut down to create a single tonne of paper4, that's not the only tree we should be thinking about.

So with all these billions of dollars of gifts to wrap, what can we do to reduce our impact on the environment and still keep the title of Best Gift Giver in the family?
